Apple sells 2 million iPads in two months


Apple store employees wait to help customers with iPad purchases, after its launch in Vancouver on May 28.

Technology giant Apple Inc has said it sold two million iPads since its launch two months ago on high demand for the tablet PC.

The iPad sales had crossed one million mark in just 28 days after it was launched on April 3 in the US.

“Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs adding, “We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.”

iPad costs $ 499, excluding other charges, in the U.S.

The multimedia touchscreen device can be used to browse the web, read and send e-mail, share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read e-books among others.

Last week, Apple began selling iPads in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the U.K. Apple said the device would be available in nine more countries in July and additional countries later this year.

Android Crushing Windows Mobile Globally, Apple Could be Next


Android phones are now outpacing Windows Mobile globally and is quickly gaining on the popular Apple iPhone.

The smartphone world is changing and it’s changing fast. Companies that were big performers for years are now seeing their profits and market share slide precipitously. Among the companies are Microsoft and Palm.

Palm was recently purchased by HP and Microsoft is seeing the market share of its Windows Mobile offerings plummet as phone makers migrate to open platforms like Android. Android devices are burning up the global market and in the U.S., Android has now outpaced the iPhone in market share for Q1 2010.

The global market for smartphones is very similar reports Reuters. Android was the fourth most popular operating system sold globally in Q1 2010 according to Gartner. That puts Android’s global reach ahead of Microsoft’s mobile OS and Android is gaining on the iPhone quickly on the global market.

As the Android OS grows in popularity, more and more developers are working on apps for the OS. Chris Moore from Redpoint Ventures said, “I am quite impressed by the traction the Android ecosystem is getting.” He goes on to say, “I want to say that on the current trajectory, they (Android) will pass the iPhone platform, or at least reach parity by the end of this year or middle of next year.”

The most pressure is definitely being put on Microsoft in the global smartphone market. The company is the only one who charges handset makers a licensing fee for its smartphone OS. More and more companies that traditionally built Windows Mobile devices are looking to Android as a free and more popular alternative.

In addition to looking at the reach of smartphone OS’ globally, Gartner also looked at the most popular device makers around the globe. Nokia still holds the top spot with 35% of the global handset market. Samsung is next with 20.6%, LG has 8.6%, RIM has 3.4%, and Apple takes seventh place on the list with 2.7% of the market. The top smartphone OS in the world is Symbian with 44.3% of the market, Blackberry OS is next with 19.4% of the market, iPhone has 15.4% of the market, with Android at 9.6% of the market. Windows Mobile has 6.8% of the smartphone OS market.

“In the first quarter of 2010, smartphone sales to end users saw their strongest year-on-year increase since 2006,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner. “This quarter saw RIM, a pure smartphone player, make its debut in the top five mobile devices manufacturers, and saw Apple increase its market share by 1.2 percentage points. Android’s momentum continued into the first quarter of 2010, particularly in North America, where sales of Android-based phones increased 707 per cent year-on-year.”

Milanesi went on to say, “Growth [for Apple] came partly from new communication service providers in established markets, such as the UK, and stronger sales in new markets such as China and South Korea. The second quarter of 2010 will be a very important one for Apple. We expect that Apple will present its new iPhone in June during its Worldwide Developer Conference, which will be the first to feature the latest release of the iPhone OS that includes welcome improvements for developers and users, such as multitasking.”

This Is Apple’s Next iPhone


You are looking at Apple’s next iPhone. It was found lost in a bar in Redwood City, camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS. We got it. We disassembled it. It’s the real thing, and here are all the details.

While Apple may tinker with the final packaging and design of the final phone, it’s clear that the features in this lost-and-found next-generation iPhone are drastically new and drastically different from what came before. Here’s the detailed list of our findings:

What’s new

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What’s changed

• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

iPhone set to surpass BlackBerry in mobile market: Forbes

Apple’s iPhone is set to overtake Research In Motion’s BlackBerry in the global smart phone market by next year, according to Forbes online.

Currently, BlackBerry enjoys about three percent of the world’s mobile phone market, while Apple’s has about two percent share of the market. But BlackBerry’s lead over iPhone is shrinking and Apple will overtake RIM by early next year, Forbes said Friday.

“We expect Apple’s market share to overtake that of RIM by 2011, and for Apple and RIM to have 11 % and 8% market share, respectively, by the end of Trefis forecast period,” the online issue said.

Trefis has been defined as a new financial platform to know how a company’s products impact its stock.

“We believe sales of the iPhone will eventually outpace BlackBerry sales,” Forbes said.

Giving its reasons, Forbes online said, “Apple’s ecosystem of consumer products (Macs, iPad, Apple TV) and services (iTunes, iPhones apps) make the iPhone a more attractive phone for many consumers compared to the BlackBerry.”

“End of AT&T exclusivity will give Apple’s iPhone wider distribution in the US (comparable to BlackBerry distribution). iPhone is making inroads with business customers that have traditionally preferred the BlackBerry.”

Both the wireless giants have made big gains since 2007, with iPhone increasing its market share from 0.3 percent to 2 percent, and BlackBerry going up from one percent to about three percent.

The Canadian icon BlackBerry captured the world’s corporate market because of secure messaging.

However, with Apple’s sleek iPhone gaining the consumer market, the numbers game is slowly slipping away from the BlackBerry.

Given Apple’s marketing muscle, online reach and multiple cutting-edge products with synergy, analysts say it is only a matter of time before the iPhone overtakes the BlackBerry in the global smart phone market.

Apple sues rival HTC as phone competition rises

As Apple Inc.’s iPhone faces stiffer competition in the lucrative market for smart phones, the company is going after one of its main rivals with patent lawsuits claiming theft of touch screen technology and other features.

The complaints, which Apple filed Tuesday, cover a slew of models made by Taiwanese phone maker HTC Corp., including the Nexus One, G1 and myTouch 3G – all using the free, rival Android mobile operating software from Google Inc. Non-Android phones include HTC’s Touch series.

But consumers shouldn’t worry about buying or using any of those phones. Patent cases can take months or years to resolve – sometimes longer than the life of these phones – and agreements over licensing and royalty payments often emerge.

Still, it shows Apple’s get-tough strategy as significant competitors emerge.

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement. “We’ve decided to do something about it.”

Apple said HTC has infringed on 20 of its patents covering aspects of the iPhone’s user interface and hardware.

Several relate to technology behind touch screens, including one that lets a device’s screen detect more than one finger touch at a time, allowing someone to zoom in or out by spreading their fingers apart or pinching them together, for instance. Another patent refers to using sensors on a device to gather information about a user’s activity or surroundings and letting the device react by, for example, lighting up.

Google, whose software powers many of the HTC phones, was not listed as a defendant.

When the iPhone first came out in 2007, it changed the smart phone landscape by introducing a stylish, easy-to-use device. Apple later followed with an application store that extended the capabilities of the device far beyond just making phone calls, checking e-mails and surfing the Web.

Since the iPhone’s debut, Apple has had a lock on much of the smart phone market, alongside Research In Motion Ltd., which makes the popular BlackBerry devices.

However, over the last year or so, more competition has emerged from such phone makers as HTC and Motorola Inc., which are rolling out smart phones that use Google’s Android software. Not only do these phones appeal to consumers, but they also work on numerous wireless networks, unlike the iPhone, which is still limited in the U.S. to AT&T Inc.

In a court filing, Apple said HTC’s phones improperly used Apple’s patent—protected technologies without a proper license.

Apple is seeking unspecified damages and court orders to block U.S. sales of HTC’s Android phones and other products that Apple says violate its patents.

The complaints were filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission, which has the power to block imports of products and parts made with contested technology, and U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Delaware, which can award damages and order HTC to stop sales.

In an e-mail message, HTC spokeswoman Linda Mills said the company only learned of the lawsuits on Tuesday through media reports and hasn’t had time to review Apple’s claims.

“HTC values patent rights and their enforcement but is also committed to defending its own technology innovations,” Mills said.

Technology companies routinely file complaints against competitors over intellectual property. Apple itself faces litigation over the iPhone and other products from the Finnish cell phone maker Nokia Corp., which claims that Apple is using patented technology that helps cut manufacturing costs, shrink the size of consumer gadgets and preserve battery life. Apple responded to Nokia’s complaint by filing a countersuit.

Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek noted that Apple has not sued that many companies in the past, so the HTC lawsuit must either be a strategic move or the result of what Apple considers a clear infringement on its patents.

If Apple prevails, HTC would face a big roadblock, In-Stat analyst Allen Nogee said.

Nogee said Apple likely waited for awhile to file the complaints because, with several devices now out, it could see a bigger financial gain in the end.

“If they pounce the first day a phone comes out that infringes on a patent then the biggest take they can have is the revenue from that one phone,” he said.

Shares of Apple, which is based in Cupertino, California, slipped 14 cents to close Tuesday at $208.85.

10:34AM So far no word on multitasking, but we haven’t seen it. Jumps into and out of apps,
nothing running concurrently.

you have right onto the iPad. Now if the developer spends some time modifying their app, they

this now… and we’re releasing it today.”

different — it’s kind of like holding an HD display up to your face. It’s really cool.”

done a great job of pioneering this… we’re going to stand on their shoulders for this. Our new
app is called iBooks.”

new iBook Store. You can download right onto your iPad.”

10:59AM “Could the tablet handle that? You betcha. But they required a new UI — here’s Phil

11:02AM They’ve really redone this interface. We don’t know about you, but using iWork wasn’t
one of our fantasies when we thought about what an Apple tablet would be like. This is nice…
but it’s iWork.
11:03AM We’ll say this — iWork looks really robust. Far more than an iPhone app. Lots of
options, lots of ways to work with your data.
11:05AM Automatic transition animations. Very nice. “So that’s a preview. Now let’s go to Pages.”
11:05AM “Like Keynote I see a gallery of documents.”
11:06AM New tool: Page Navigator. It’s a bit like the magnification loop and lets you jump
through pages. Automatic image outlines — just drag your image and text reformats.
11:09AM Interesting. A data entry keyboard just for entering info into a spreadsheet. There are
a number of different keyboard for specific tasks, also a date and time keyboard.
11:10AM It looks as though these new dropdowns menus are a major part of the iPad OS.
Will be interesting to see how this translates to the iPhone and iPod touch. Is there going to
be room? Or will they be left out entirely?
11:11AM And the iWork demo is done. “So what are we going to charge for applications like this?
We’re gong to charge just $9.99 each.” He means $10 for Pages, $10 for Keynote… etc.
11:11AM “That’s iWork on the iPad.” And Steve is… back!
11:12AM “Isn’t it great?” Some slight hesitation. “A few other things. I’d like to talk for a minute
about iTunes. The iPad syncs over USB just like an iPhone or iPod.”
11:13AM “Now I’d like to talk about wireless networking. Every iPad has WiFi… but we’re also
going to have models with 3G.”
11:14AM “Now what does it cost for the data plans? Well in the US carriers charge about $60 a
month. We have a real breakthrough. Two awesome plans for iPad owners. The first one gives
you 250MB of data a month for $14.99.”
11:14AM “We have an unlimited plan for just $29.99 a month.”
11:14AM “We have a breakthrough deal with AT&T.” Wow. Some serious sharp intakes of breath
here.
11:15AM “So how do you turn this on and manage it? You can activate this right on the iPad.
And there’s no contract — it’s prepaid.”
11:16AM “So we have a breakthrough deal in the US. We hope to have our international deals
in the June / July timeframe. However, all of the iPad 3G models are unlocked, and they use the
new GSM microSIMs.”
11:17AM “WiFI plus 3G if you want it. So iPad. It’s phenomenal. Email is fantastic, best device
for photos, great for music, great for video. It runs almost all of the 140k apps on the app store,
as well as a whole new generation of apps.”
11:17AM “And the new iBooks application. You can carry literally thousands of books around.
And the iWork suite of apps with the best UI we’ve ever seen for something like this.”
11:17AM “What should we price it at?”
11:18AM “If you listen to the pundits, we’re going to price it under $1000, which is code for $999.
When we set out to develop this, we had ambitious tech goals, but we had aggressive price goals.”
11:18AM “And just like we were able to meet or exceed our tech goals, we have met our cost
goals… iPad pricing starts at $499.”
11:20AM “So $499 for 16GB of iPad. That’s our base model. 32GB is $599, 64GB is $799.
3G models cost an extra $130. $629, 729, and 829 with 3G.”
11:20AM “We will be shipping these in 60 days. 3G models will ship in 90 days.”
11:21AM “We’ve got some really great accessories. First one is a dock. You know the slideshow
I showed you? When it’s in the dock you have a great picture frame. We have another dock
that’s interesting… the keyboard dock.” What!?
